Peel Centre, Hendon
Client: Metropolitan Police
Working
under CDM regulations direct to the Metropolitan Police, Caswell
Environmental Services undertook a five week fast-track programme
of asbestos abatement in this 500-bedroom residential centre for
police cadets, which is part of the Met's training college complex
in Hendon. The project followed an initial asbestos type 2 location
and condition survey report highlighting the abatement work required
on the site, which comprises 3 tower blocks of 14 floors each, with
10 flats per floor. The report found contamination to risers and
electrical cupboards and advised encapsulation of all remaining
asbestos products and decontamination of risers under fully controlled
conditions.
The decontamination was achieved and a clearance/re-encapsulation
certificate issued for each riser. The project required removals
to one floor per day per block at the rate of 34 clearances per
day. A particular challenge was that, because all 3 blocks remained
occupied for the duration of the project, the work was required
to be completed within normal hours, without zoning off areas and
working around the occupants in 10 hour shifts. The whole project
was completed within time and without hitches, to the full satisfaction
of the client.
