UKAEA HQ, Harwell
Three
research reactors at the UKAEA headquarters in Harwell, Oxfordshire,
were closed in 1990 and its DIDO and PLUTO reactors decommissioned
to the point where they can be left for around 40 years before final
dismantling. Buildings which were used for handling radioactive
materials had to be completely removed, with the long term aim of
delicensing former nuclear areas so they can be released for unrestricted
use.
Caswell
Environmental Services Ltd was a key contractor in this process,
working on behalf of Amersham plc - which leases two buildings on
the UKAEA Harwell site - from its own dedicated on-site office,
from 19XX to date.
Following its work at Harwell, Caswell Environmental Services Ltd
has since won a 7 year contract with the Culham Science Centre,
the home of the JET project and a purpose-built laboratory for the
UKAEA-administered UK fusion programme which occupies around 180
acres near Abingdon, Oxfordshire.
