Primark, Birmingham
Caswell
Environmental Services Ltd has played an important part in facilitating
the expansion of retail store Primark, which since the late 1990s
has been acquiring and refurbishing premises in many of Britain's
key retail localities. To date, the company has been involved in
refurbishment projects at Primark stores in Newport, Sunderland,
Hemel Hempstead and Boscombe.
Its
decision to acquire and convert a former Boots premises in Birmingham
presented a particular challenge to the developers, as the 5-storey,
1500 square feet building was part of an established city centre
site close to other retail outlets and New Street railway station,
with major limitations on access. There was also an obligation to
minimise disruption to neighbouring retailers and businesses, and
to adhere to noise restrictions.
As
the contracted asbestos removal specialists, Caswell's role was
to soft strip the original premises back to shell - a process which
required opening up floors and removing waste via boxed chutes and
crane lifts to the loading bay. Although scheduled to last 6 weeks,
the programme of works was brought in early to the full approval
and satisfaction of the client.
